Snow mold is one of the few lawn problems where the damage shows up in March and April, but the cause was set in October and November. By the time you see matted, straw-colored patches at the edge of a melting snowbank, the fungus has been working for weeks under the snow. The good news is that most of what prevents it is free and happens this fall: how you mow, what you do with leaves, and where the snow gets piled.

The Two Snow Molds You'll See in Minnesota

Gray Snow Mold

Typhula species · Typhula blight

Why Minnesota Lawns Get Hit

Snow mold needs a cold, wet, dark, undisturbed environment, and a Minnesota winter provides all four. A heavy snowfall that lands before the ground freezes acts like a blanket, holding the soil just above freezing and the turf canopy saturated for months. Fungus stays active in that space while the grass is dormant and can't defend itself.

Some lawns are far more prone than others. The usual culprits:

  • Leaves left on the lawn. A wet, matted leaf layer holds moisture against the grass all winter.
  • Long grass going into winter. Tall blades lay over under snow and form a wet mat that fungus loves.
  • Snow piles. Snow plowed or blown onto turf melts last and stays wet longest, so patches show up in the same spots year after year.
  • Heavy late-season nitrogen. A flush of soft, lush growth right before snow is more vulnerable.
  • Thick thatch and shade. Both keep the turf surface damp and slow to dry in spring.

Your Fall Prevention Timeline

Most of these steps only work if they're finished before permanent snow cover, which in southern Minnesota typically arrives sometime between mid-November and early December.

1. Keep mowing until growth stops, then drop the last cuts

Don't stop mowing early. Grass that goes into winter tall lays over under snow and forms exactly the wet mat snow mold needs. Keep cutting at your normal height while the lawn is growing, then bring the final one or two mows down gradually to about 2–2.5 inches. Don't scalp it. Dropping too far, too fast stresses the crowns you want to protect.

2. Get every leaf off before the snow

This is the single easiest prevention step. A layer of wet leaves under snow is a perfect environment for both molds, and they smother the turf underneath on top of it. Mulch-mow light leaf fall into fine pieces that disappear into the canopy. Rake or blow anything heavy. If leaf season gets away from you, our leaf cleanup service handles it.

3. Plan where the snow goes

Every winter, plow and snowblower piles show up as snow mold patches in spring, because the pile sits on the lawn for weeks after everything else has melted. Push or blow snow onto driveway edges, beds, or gravel where you can. If you hire snow removal, tell the crew where the piles should and shouldn't go before the first snowfall.

4. Cut back on thatch

A thatch layer thicker than about half an inch holds water at the surface and keeps the crowns wet. Core aeration in fall breaks up thatch, opens the soil, and prepares the lawn for overseeding. 5. Don't push heavy nitrogen late in the season

Stick to your program's fall fertilizer timing (see our fall fertilization guide for the science and the winterizer question). Fast-release nitrogen right before snow pushes soft, lush growth into the coldest, wettest part of the year, which is the tissue snow mold attacks first.

What about fungicide?

A preventive fungicide has to go down in late fall, before permanent snow cover. It is mostly used on golf greens and athletic fields, or on lawns that get hit hard every year. For most home lawns, the cultural steps above are what prevent damage, and gray snow mold usually recovers on its own. Once you can see the mold in spring, fungicide can't repair the damage. The pathogen goes inactive as the weather warms.

What to Do in Spring If You Get It Anyway

Most snow mold looks worse than it is. Unless the crowns were killed, the grass grows back on its own once temperatures rise. Here's the recovery order that works:

  1. Wait for the turf to dry, then rake gently. Use a leaf rake to fluff up the matted grass. This lets air and light in and speeds drying, which shuts the fungus down. Don't power-rake or dethatch a soggy lawn in early spring.
  2. Skip the fungicide. It won't help once the damage is done.
  3. Hold off on heavy fertilizer until the grass is actively growing again. Then follow your normal spring program.
  4. Give it 3–4 weeks of real growing weather. Gray snow mold usually greens back up in that time.
  5. Overseed bare spots that stay bare after that. This is more common with pink snow mold, which can reach the crowns. Use the timing in our overseeding guide.

Is it really snow mold?

Patches that look like snow mold can also be caused by vole runways (see our last mow guide for how to tell voles from moles; look for winding tunnels, or trails of chewed grass), road salt (patches along driveways and sidewalks; see our salt damage guide), or dog urine. If the patches have clean tunnel trails, are next to pavement, or don't have any matted fungal growth or pinkish edge, snow mold probably isn't the cause.
