Every spring, the same thing shows up along Minnesota driveways and sidewalks: a strip of brown, thin, or dead grass running right alongside the pavement. It's road salt and ice melt damage. The turf didn't die in the spring, though. The damage happened over the winter, every time salt-laden snow melted and ran off onto the lawn, and all you're seeing now is the result. That means the best prevention happens now, before the first snowfall.

How Salt Damages Turf

Salt hurts grass in two different ways, and knowing which one you have changes the fix.

Minnesota's heavy clay soils make the soil side worse. Clay drains slowly, so salt lingers in the root zone long after the snow is gone.

Is It Really Salt?

Several winter problems leave brown patches in spring, and each needs a different fix. Here's how to tell them apart.

  • Salt: the damage follows the pavement edge in a strip, and it's worst at the low end of a slope or where plowed snow was piled. It often looks the same year after year.
  • Snow mold: round patches with a matted, gray or pinkish crust, usually not tied to pavement. See our snow mold guide.
  • Voles: winding surface trails of chewed grass, and no pavement pattern. See the last mow guide.
  • Dog urine: scattered spots, often with a dark green ring around a dead center.

When you're not sure, a soil test settles it. Ask for soluble salts (sometimes listed as electrical conductivity or EC) and sodium. A sample from the damaged strip compared to a sample from healthy turf farther from the pavement tells you whether salt is the cause.

Which Ice Melt Does the Least Damage?

None of them is harmless to plants. The goal is to use less and choose the right product for the temperature. All temperatures below are approximate, so check the bag.

Rock salt stops working well when it's colder than about 15°F, so on the coldest days, spreading it just wastes salt and puts it in the lawn. Sand for traction is often the better call.

1. Shovel or plow first, then treat what's left

Ice melt works best on thin ice and packed snow you can't remove. Clearing as much snow as you can before it gets compacted means you need far less product, and less product means less salt in the lawn.

2. Use less than you think

A thin, even layer works. Piles of pellets don't melt ice faster, they just dissolve into a concentrated puddle that runs into the turf. A hand spreader gives you far more control than pouring from the bag. Once the ice is gone, sweep leftover pellets off the pavement and reuse them.

3. Keep salty snow off the grass

Snow that's been salted or plowed off a salted surface carries a lot of dissolved salt, and when it melts on the lawn it delivers all of it to one spot. Push and blow snow toward hard surfaces, gravel, or an area where runoff won't reach turf you care about. That's the same advice we gave in our snow mold guide, since snow piles on the lawn cause two problems at once. If you hire snow removal, tell the crew where the piles should and shouldn't go, and ask what de-icer they use.

4. Protect the road side

You can't control what the plow throws from a public road, but a burlap screen set up a few feet back from the edge in early winter blocks spray from reaching shrubs and the outer strip of lawn. A strip of salt-tolerant plants or a gravel border also helps.

5. Pre-treat before storms when you can

Applying a small amount of brine or product before ice forms keeps it from bonding to the pavement, which lets you scrape it off with less product afterward. Use it in the narrow area you actually need, not the whole driveway.

How to Repair Salt-Damaged Turf in Spring

  1. Flush the soil. Once the ground has thawed and drains, water the damaged strip slowly and deeply, adding extra water over several sessions, so the salt moves down below the root zone. Rain helps, but a dry spring needs supplemental water. This works best where drainage is good. In slow clay, go slowly so it soaks in instead of running off.
  2. Rake out the dead grass so new growth can reach the sun.
  3. Aerate the strip. Core aeration improves drainage and helps the flush move through the soil.
  4. Test before adding gypsum. Gypsum can help displace sodium from the soil, but only if a soil test shows high sodium. It does nothing for chloride, which flushing handles. Applying it without a test is a waste.
  5. Go easy on fertilizer. Fertilizer is a salt too, and stressed roots take up water poorly. Wait until the turf is actively growing before feeding.
  6. Reseed the bare spots. After flushing, overseed the strip. Perennial ryegrass and tall fescue tolerate salt better than Kentucky Bluegrass, so a blend that includes them is a smart choice for a strip next to pavement. See the overseeding guide for timing and seed selection.

Will the grass come back?

Often, yes, especially if it was mostly spray burn and the crowns are alive. Give it three to four weeks of real growing weather before you decide anything. If the strip is still bare after flushing and warm weather, seed it. If it dies back again the following year, the salt load is too high and you need to reduce it at the source or change what grows there.
