The problem is what happens to the soil around those holes. When a solid spike is driven into clay soil, it doesn't remove material — it compresses it sideways. The soil immediately surrounding each spike hole becomes more compacted than before. You end up with a series of tiny holes ringed by dense compressed soil walls, which actually restricts water movement between holes.

The core problem with spike aeration on Minnesota clay soils:

Solid tines compact the soil sideways as they penetrate. On clay-heavy Minnesota soils, this creates a "compaction ring" around each hole — the opposite of what you're trying to achieve. Spike aeration provides minimal benefit on compacted clay and can make conditions marginally worse in the surrounding soil.
