What Are Grubs

Stop grubs before they destroy your Owatonna lawn

White grubs are the larvae of Japanese beetles, June bugs, and other beetles that lay eggs in lawns across Steele and Mower County every summer. They hatch in late summer and feed on grass roots just below the surface — leaving dead patches that peel back like carpet.

The Problem

Root feeding damage

Grubs feed on grass roots 1–3 inches below the surface. By the time you see brown patches appearing in August and September, significant root damage has already occurred. Prevention is far more effective than treatment after the fact.

Secondary Damage

Birds and skunks

Raccoons, skunks, and birds detect grubs below the surface and tear up turf to get to them. This secondary damage is often more visible and more damaging than the grubs themselves. Owatonna and Austin lawns with grub problems frequently see this kind of digging.

Timing

Early summer application is critical

Preventative grub control must be applied before grub eggs hatch — typically June through early July in southern Minnesota. Applications timed correctly protect the entire season. Curative treatments applied after hatching are significantly less effective.
